What’s in a Promise?

Mitzvah. and it has a real difficulty figuring out how I was going to tailor this because I felt like I had this message which I've elements of it I've given before. But also how is it specifically applicable to you today? So we're going to see if this works, but for everyone else's sake.

I spoke from lecla last week as well, which it's abnormal to do. Because the Torah portion changes every week and lecla I I what I will say. This week's Torah portion and next week's Torah portion. I think are perhaps two of my favorite and if if not, Favorites, they're at least what I would consider to be foundational for who we all are.

1:32 In our Messiah Yeshua Jews and Gentiles together. I think these are two of the most foundational Torah portions or even passages scriptures blocks of scripture in the whole Bible. So to me, I I had fun that I can. Teach from the same Torah portion two weeks in a row. I normally have to decide between the elements that I want to want to teach from this week. I only had to decide between 12 and so we'll see we'll see how I narrowed it down. I want to start with two different stories. Both of which happened to me this week? first of all

So like if I get lost I'm usually enjoying looking at areas that I've been before so I'm driving and I know how to get to Brook Hashem and

3:51 so I go a different way. And I would just so happens that this morning. I was listening to the Torah portion being read audially. So I usually one day out of the week. I'll drive in and I'll listen to the Torah portion. And so I'm driving in and it goes through the whole Torah portion and and it stops and I, you know, turn my AUD in my car radio off. and and I'm just seeking the Lord because I know I'm coming to your butt Mitzvah and I'm like Lord, what is it that you want me to to teach about and I kept coming back. to this one section which which would seem

4:37 I'm not even sure what the word is not as pertinent to us at Brooke Hashem or even you in your own life as other portions of this of this Torah portion. And so I start to pray and I'm like Lord. Is this really is this really what I'm what I'm supposed to be teaching about. and I'm just gonna give you four warning the passage. I'm looking at today is from Genesis chapter. six teen starting in verse 10 it's when the Lord appears to Hagar and speak to her concerning the birth of Ishmael. And I open I shouldn't say I opened my eyes because I was driving.

5:22 so I I'm praying I and I do pray with my eyes open and if you don't pray with your eyes open and you're driving you have other things to be praying about. So so all of a sudden. It is a little bit as if my eyes are opened. I've been driving. I haven't lost sight of the road. but as I'm praying about the Torah portion and the birth of Ishmael I look up. And I happen to be passing a mosque. and and it's interesting. I don't always do this and maybe maybe I'm condemning myself in all of y'all's sight, but

6:08 by not always doing this but at this moment I felt impressed. Because of what I was just listening to and what I was just praying about to pray for the members of that mosque. And to ask for yeshua's Revelation to come in their midst. I don't know if God listened to me or not. But I'm telling you my own side of the experience and that's really all we can do. now let me Let me now tell you a different story. I was I don't I can't remember what I was doing, but I was doing something with my family this week. and and we're talking about Hanukkah presence. And by the way, my children have noted. That Hanukkah is now next month.

6:55 And I'm thinking myself. Oh my goodness. Can we just like slow the roll here? and Ella I'm glad she's in class. Ella because he's talking to to bring him my wife and she goes I know what I'm getting from Dad for Hanukkah. And I kind of looked at her and I was like really? Do you know can you tell me what it is that I'm getting you? And she says yeah last year. You told me you were going to make a bed for my doll for Hanukkah and you didn't do it last year for Hanukkah. So I know you're doing it this year for Hanukkah. And Brittany looks at me and goes you made the promise, not me.

7:40 All of that to say the title of my message is what's in a promise. You see because when we promise things we tend to forget as is the case in the the doll bed. for my for my daughter God doesn't forget his promises. When God makes a promise, they will come to pass. Sometimes in spite of us. Sometimes we can join him. I mean he always calls us to join him. But sometimes we don't think about it and either we're sitting on the side or we're actively working against his promises.

8:26 So I'm gonna make a couple clarifications that I did last week for everybody's sake. I I know that in this week's tour portion Abraham starts off by being called Abram. And Sarah starts off by being called Sarai. I'm telling you all of this because I'm going to call them Abraham and Sarah the whole time. Just for clarity's sake I don't want to confuse you but I do recognize that they go through a particular moment in this week's Torah portion where their names change. Secondly, this week's Torah portion and you talked about this and I'm gonna highlight it just for a moment and then we're gonna move past it but I I felt when I'm talking about promises I couldn't come through this tour portion and not mention it.

9:13 The Lord makes a promise. Or God's word to Abraham is this I will make of you a great nation. In Genesis chapter 12. I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and I will make your name great. And you are to be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and I will curse anyone who curses you and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed. And we see again. This is this is reiterated. It's not just given once it's reiterated in the next chapter Genesis 13. And after in fact, this is what I talked about last week and the Lord said to Abraham after a lot had moved away from him look all around you from where you are to the north to the South to the east to the West all the

10:00 land. You see I will give to you in your descendants forever. And I will make your descendants as numerous as the specks of dust on the Earth. So that if a person can count the specs of dust on the earth, then your descendants can be counted. Get up walk through the length in the breath of the land because I will give it to you. And then we see later. in this in this portion where the Lord actually cuts a covenant with Abraham solidifying his promises, you know, because God has to solidify anything that he says that was totally sarcasm if you can't read my my intonations but the Lord cuts a covenant with Abraham in Genesis

10:46 15 And reiterates his promises now up until this point God has already spoken a promise. And Abraham takes lot with him. And then maybe his Abraham's. Hopes are that lot will be as inheritor. until lot leaves in Genesis 13 and then Abraham approaches to the Lord. And I think it's the first verses of 15. Yeah, verse 2 of chapter 15 Abraham approaches the Lord and says well it's obviously not lot because he's gone. Is it going to be Elias or my trusted servant who will be the inheritor of your promises? Because the Lord has promised that Abraham will be

11:32 made into a great nation and will have children descendants. And the Lord says it's not going to be eliaser. You're gonna have a child from your own body. Now he's speaking to Abraham at this point. And so now we come to chapter 16. It has been. If my memory serves me, I think it's been 10 years 10 or 11 years 13 years somewhere right in that Realm. Since the Lord said you're gonna have a lot of kids. You not not. Lot, not Elias are but you Abraham. And time has passed. and Abraham

12:18 through various means gets Hagar pregnant that's a whole other discussion, which we're not having today. We're going to go straight to chapter in Hagar. Actually, then is forced to flee because Sarah treats her harshly I think is the word that's used. Treats her harshly. Afflicted her that's the word Afflicted her and actually this is just as a hint this this actually foreshadows. It's the same word that's used. to talk about the Egyptians afflicting the Israelites while they're in their midst. And so you see a little back and forth going on here between now and then Abraham's descendants

13:05 Abraham Isaac and Jacobs descendants who were in Egypt 400 years later. And so Hagar flees and so we in Hagar fleas and she comes. To the Wilderness and this is what happens we so we're in chapter 16 verse 10. And we'll go through. Verse 14 the angel of the Lord said to her I will create Lee increase your descendants. There will be so many that will be impossible to count them. Is the Lord speaking to Hagar? The angel of the Lord said to her look you were pregnant. And you will give birth to a son you were to call him Ishmael. Because God pays attention.

And he will be a wild donkey of a man with his hand against everyone and everyone's hand against him. Living it odds with all his Kinsmen. So she named? Adonai she named the Lord. I've already mentioned Hagar is pregnant and now she's alone. She's separated herself from the house of Abraham from from the grouping. And in fact, I think it was an Aaron's Josh last week. He made a note. When when Abraham goes to war to capture all the people who captured lot, he takes 318 Men of War with him. And if those are the men of War then that means Abraham's Camp. He wouldn't leave his Camp without any That there's already some back at the camp. So Abraham's campus probably a thousand people I think is the number that that Aaron mentions

15:22 last week. And and I think I would agree with him Abraham's Camp is about 1,000 people plus or minus. a thousand Just you know, I'm getting real chancy on my guesses here. But there's a lot of people there and and when you're in a large group, there's a lot of Safety and Security. But when you separate yourself from the group, you're out on your own on the road with Bandits and who who are out there to to rob you and and to make your life miserable. Not that her life wasn't already being made miserable in the camp. But she at this point is now pregnant and alone. She's been forced to flee from the protective covering of Abraham's Entourage.

16:08 And it's at this point where the angel of the Lord appears to her. He and he comes and he finds her and says he finds her by a spring in the desert on the road to shore. So sure is traditionally located to the north. West Northeast yeah Northeast to the northeast of Egypt. So if you can think if you can picture the map of Israel and kind of like the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt in your mind, it's Egypt only this way. It's Egypt. It's Egypt. Sure, and then Israel Kanan so you

16:56 can see that she's got a trajectory to go back to Egypt. I wonder why well, that's probably where she's from because she's known as an Egyptian. So if if she leaves her camp. She's gonna have to go back to something and find protection somewhere else. So she's on the way. Back toward Egypt. Her country of origin and she stops at this Desert Spring along the way and it's at this place where the where the angel of the Lord has found her. He asks her. Where are you coming from? And where are you going? I laugh a little bit because the Lord asks us lots of questions. And in reality, he never once needs to ask us.

17:43 Because he already knows. But sometimes it's helpful for us as people to actually verbalize what it is. That we're doing. And so sometimes we have to come to the Lord and be like I'm going from this place to this place because I was having this really bad situation. And the Lord hears it and then will help us with our Direction. Now I want to make a note here. For your sake but really for everyone else's sake. Hagar is the first woman recorded in scripture to whom a Divine messenger is sent. She's the first. And she gets a Divine messenger. Not once

18:31 but twice and we're going to come back to some of this in a little bit as well. The angel of the Lord gives Hagar some promises concerning her, baby. She is to be she is the first woman. to receive and hear and enunciation of a birth now you talked about foreshadowing and I think that was the word you use foreshadowing in your drush. This is a prototype or this is a foreshadow of the very statement that is given to the mother of our Messiah. You are pregnant.

19:18 Or you will in the case of our mess I you will be pregnant. There are similarities in the text even between Hagar and Miriam. Here's the promise that he the immediate promise that he gives to Hagar. I will greatly increase your descendants. There will be so many. That it will be impossible to count them Genesis 16:10. Hagar is the first and apart from Sarah the only woman in the Tanakh to receive a Divine promise of descendants. Now I also mentioned that there's Miriam as well.

20:04 This Promise of increased descendants serves to comfort Hagar and parallels the promise that the Lord gives to Abraham and subsequently to Isaac and Jacob this is one of the reasons why I started with that that he will increases descendants and make him a great nation. so we see Hagar is out in the wild at this point. She's in the desert. I was looking at pictures and again, I probably should have sent him so I could show you some pictures but it doesn't matter. I was just looking at pictures of of this area. and to be alone with a baby pregnant with a baby in this area

20:51 I mean Even not being pregnant if I were alone in that area. I'm pretty sure I just roll over and say Lord take me home. Because it's a it's a it's a harsh wilderness. Where she is? And she happens to be at a spring where there's water. But outside of that. There's gonna be no water. and she's alone and she's pregnant and I think of I think of those early months of my wife when she was pregnant with any one of my children and the sickness that it that's happening and her inability to to travel anywhere and yet Hagar is here on the road and I I just think of all of those issues and

21:36 she's here alone and suffering and it's at this point where the angel of the Lord appears to her. and she is so blessed and encouraged by his appearance. That she gives them a name that says the Lord sees me and we're going to get into that in a few minutes. The Lord sees me in my situation and and has comforted me. And so she turns back and goes back as the Lord answer as the Lord instructor. I'm telling you that because if that's her end result and she's in this desperate place than the stuff that's in between has got to be an encouragement. Because if it's not an encouragement, she's not going to go Lord. You you saw me and you didn't answer anything. Thank

22:22 you very much. Like that would be her response. So the Lord season and answers and so now we're getting to the in-between part. Which is found in verse? starting in verse 11 behold your pregnant and about to Bear a son and you shall name him Ishmael for the Lord has heard you're Affliction. So this is the part where she's Afflicted and now the Lord has heard and now the Lord says concerning Ishmael. He will be a wild donkey of a man. With his hand against everyone and everyone's hand against him living his life at odds with all of his Kinsmen.

Because that sounds pretty discouraging to me. if the Lord appeared to Brittany when she was pregnant with one of my children, let's just call it Max and said well and said He's gonna be a wild donkey. His hand is gonna be against everyone. And he's gonna be at odds with all of his Kinsmen. I'll be like thanks Lord. That's what you got. Like can you reshuffle the deck, please? And give me something else. It doesn't sound very encouraging upon the surface.

23:55 Because remember Hagar is desperate. She's destitute and now she's also told to return to the same conditions that she fled from. And this is what's supposed to comfort her and relieve her. So let's talk about these for a few just for a few minutes. Let me check my time here. Oh, yeah, we're gonna go quick here. He's to be a wild donkey. Now generally, I've said these I've talked about these traits. I think at least three or four times. I usually say a different word. For donkey, but because it's your butt missile, he's a wild donkey. He's a wild nobody likes to be called a

So the word that's used here is is referring to what is known as the fleet footed Syrian oniger. the oniger in their nature and Destiny what they are as an animal is they are fearless. And they are fleet-footed. They live in the wilderness. And it's nearly impossible to domesticate them. We're not talking about the donkey that we can go

25:28 to some farm and see here. Not in Dallas, but outside of Dallas. We're not talking about that donkey. We're talking about this. This donkey who's called an onager and the oniger was a symbol of freedom and Mastery of his lair. The owner was admired as a swift beautiful wild Untamed free and strong Master of the desert environment again. Remember where she is? Because it means something. These would be necessary traits. For Ishmael to thrive in the harsh lands, that would be his inheritance. And we're going to come back to that in just a minute.

26:14 But I also want to note. Toward Hagar specifically this embodies a reversal of her slavery. She's been enslaved up until this point. But her son will be a free. man, a man of the wild without confine he'll be able to roam at at his own will. Now the first the wild donkey is closely related with the second trait, which is his hand against everyone. How can I say it's linked closely because it's linked in the text without conjunctions. There's no and it describes part of the necessary this hand

27:00 against everyone part of the necessary personality that will be needed to survive in a tough environment. You'll be aggressive and tough and shrewd. Now I want to make a note in terms of Hagar. This is a reversal of Hagar's powerlessness at the hands of her mistress. Her son will be empowered to fight for the preservation of his freedom and his survival in his way of life. And thirdly we come to living at odds with all his Kinsmen. That's one translation. Let me let me give you an alternate reading here. from the ESV he shall dwell over against all his Kinsmen.

27:47 So we should consider this statement in terms of geological reference. Not in terms of he's going to be against those. because there's a land promise here for Ishmael. that is against or in the Hebrew all penne in the face of so, you know, sometimes I would come down but I don't want to scare you sometimes when we when we get into an argument we get into face of each other. But also when you get into the face of each other you're close. So there's two sides of the coin that there's a negative side. You can be angry in the face of someone or you can look at it as your your very close to them. Like I don't know Samantha if you have a bubble. I

28:35 have a bubble. And when someone enters into my bubble, I take a step back usually. Because I'm like, I don't necessarily want you that like close to my face. and but there's some people. That I don't mind having in my bubble that close. Because they're so close to me already. So listen to this. He's gonna dwell over against all his Kinsmen. In terms of where he's going to live Ishmael. He's going to live in the face of or in the presence of his brother Isaacs people. In other words ishmael's descendants will Thrive and they will not disappear or migrate to another part of the world. They will remain near to Isaac.

29:22 Now why is that important? Because Isaac is the son of promise? Through which blessing will come to all of the world. This just make another note this embodies a reversal of Hagar's alienation. from the family She was driven from the face of Sarah and Isaac. But Ishmael will dwell in the face of Isaac. Hagar's reaction She immediately exalts the Lord. Which is how I come to this understanding that there's got to be more here than negative traits. Because she immediately exalts the Lord after hearing the Oracle concerning Ishmael and she understands it as

According to the JPS commentary when God sees it is of course that he shows his concern and extends his protection. When Hagar sees she experiences God's self-manifestation. Abraham so Ishmael and Hagar go back. Well, I guess Hagar with Ishmael and her belly go back to the camp. And they stay for another 13 years. And when they're sent out 13 years later.

30:53 the Lord says that he will make a nation out of ishmael's Offspring chapter 21 verse 13 additionally God promises Ishmael God promises to Ishmael could not have been fulfilled. while Ishmael dwelt in the household of Abraham how can he dwell in the household and yet also be next to you can only be in we're people we can only be in one place at one time. Ishmael shows up finally we read in Genesis chapter 25 that Ishmael shows up for Abraham's funeral. And is not a rebellious or estranged son. But he honors his father and his younger brother at that time.

31:42 all of this to say there is some remarkable similarities between the blessings that are given to Isaac and to Ishmael However, it is through Isaac that all of the nations are to be blessed. Ishmael has given these distinct characteristics in place between Isaac and the rest of the world. It could be I wonder if the ishmaelites were to serve as a warrior layer of protection for Israel and from the rest of the Nations. As they were seeking to come against the promise of God. You see we often think about Yeshua as a man. But think about Yeshua as a newborn, baby.

32:31 In the newborn baby is is defenseless. That's why babies have parents. And they're not just grown on trees. Although apparently we think we can do that today. We have parents. We have family members and all that serve as a protection. But also if the promise of God to bring Redemption to the world is in its infantile stage. when it comes to Isaac Then Isaac has to be protected just like a baby in the promise of God has to be protected like a baby. And so what the Lord does is he raise it up Ishmael as this Fierce Warrior tribe that

33:16 surrounds Israel as a layer of protection. in Isaiah chapter 60 it mentions a Time. When some of the sons of Ishmael and some of the descendants of Keturah, who is is Abraham's wife after Sarah passes. Will come to beautify the house of the Lord into praise the god. of Isaac and Israel Abraham Isaac and Jacob This is looking to the Future Messianic Kingdom and at that point those tribes will come. And beautify the house of the Lord and praise the

Well, I have several things for us for us and also for you. you mentioned this was a foreshadowing or really the Middle East has been in Conflict ever since. Which is true? Because the reality is is that with every gift there's always a negative counterpart. You know someone has Charisma in there, they're able to lead people. Yeah. Well that also plays the opposite direction. They're able to lead people off a stray. So if we exercise our gifts in the negative sense, then we'll go away from the

Well, that's that's a point in just a second. but if we exercise our gifts in the positive light and what God intends then it it continues to further build the kingdom and to help. Usher in what it is that God has in store So the Middle East has been at War. partially because both Isaac and Ishmael have operated in the negative sides of their gifts. It's not just Ishmael if anybody ever tells you it's always one person's fault. Don't believe them this is just for anybody. It's never

35:38 one person's fault. It's never one group's fault. There's always something at fault in both. It is because we're people we're humans. So, let me let me come to a couple things. For you Samantha, number one? God is watching. And he will see and answer your call even in the most difficult times. as Hagar discovered It is important to understand what God has said to you. Because if it's misunderstood you might spend your life going in a different direction. And worse your children might also go

Continue to go in that different direction. in that direction it ends up in a different direction than the Lord's desire and you may end up even finding yourself in conflict and direct opposition to what he's promised you. That's the saddest. Thing about this be careful not to misinterpret his promises. Seek to encourage others. To walk in the fullest understanding of what the Lord has in store for them. So now let me

That sometimes end up. at odds with one another the global body of Messiah doesn't always necessarily agree with the Jewish people but in all of these cases and even in your own family there's this tension. Because when we come together and agree, and

We come to a different place. a different place of strength in terms of relation to the oppositional forces of the spiritual in the spiritual Realm So I want you to know you're going to live in tension. This is this is the reality. This is everybody's reality in here. And if you don't live in tension, you should be asking why. Because you might not like to answer. You have to live in tension now. I've been standing like this for a long time. And I just wonder does anybody else recognize what this looks like.

But you have to remember. in this to continue to seek to encourage others to walk in the fullest understanding of what the Lord has in store for them. Yeshua says Pray for your enemies pray for those who persecute you this is attention that we live with. praying for our enemies

43:25 but if we stand in this tension if we allow the strength of our Messiah to hold us together. What it does is it brings people together? And when people are brought together, we're building Unity. And when we build Unity we become a Force. Not that we want to be a force, but the Lord wants us to be a force.
