Our Faith
Our Faith Practices
- We are Jews and Gentiles who choose to worship the G-D of Israel in an identifiably Jewish manner in unity. That is the reason we worship on Shabbat and why we observe the Jewish Feasts and Festivals among other practices.
- Our men generally wear a kippah/yarmulke (skullcap). Gentile men are welcome to join in this practice in honoring G-D and recognizing the place of tradition in the broader Jewish Community.
- Our men generally wear a talit (the traditional prayer shawl) during our Shabbat morning services and also during the Erev Yom Kippur service. Gentile men are also welcome to join in this practice. We recommend that anyone who dons a talit first study through the Scriptures and seek to understand their motivation for donning a talit.
- What is Kosher? Our synagogue follows the prescription given in Leviticus 11 concerning the different types of edible foods.
- Liturgical Prayer – we incorporate various liturgical prayers in all of our services.
- Torah Reading – we read the parasha (weekly reading) from the Torah scroll each Shabbat. This helps keep us in connection with the worldwide Jewish Community.
- Music – We incorporate music to help lift our souls in praise of the G-D of Israel. We desire for this music to help us draw near in worship/service of the Almighty just as the ancient Levitical priests utilized instruments and Psalms to enter into His courts with praise.
- Prayer – Prayer is a part of the foundation of our relationship with G-D. It is an important aspect of the individual’s life and an important aspect of our communal life together. Prayer is our action of communicating with G-D. It requires that we give voice to our requests. It also requires that we be silent before G-D so that we can hear when He speaks to us.
Yeshua
- We believe that Yeshua (Jesus) is the Messiah. That at the appointed time, the eternal Divine Son became human. Yeshua the Messiah, a true and perfect Israelite and a fitting representative of the entire nation, born of a Jewish virgin, Miriam of Nazareth. We believe that He lived as the consummate holy tzaddik (righteous man), fulfilling without blemish all the aspects of the mitzvot (commandments) of the Torah. We believe that He died in atonement for the sins of Israel and of the entire world, was physically raised from the dead, and ascended to heaven; and that He will return in glory at the end of the age to judge the world, to save those who belong to Him, and to accomplish the final Tikkun Olam (Mending of the World).
The Big Picture
- As a congregation, BHS is dedicated to the Great Commission of Yeshua (Jesus) as expressed in the Good News of Mattityahu 28:18-20, as well as Romans 1:16, which states: “For I am not ashamed of the Good News, since it is God’s powerful means of bringing salvation to everyone who keeps on trusting, to the Jew especially, but equally to the Gentile.” (CJB)
