0:00 this week we will be continuing our Series in Luke in Luke Chapter 7 verses 11 through 17 the next day Yeshua accompanied by his tallmadine in a large crowd. Went to a town called Naim. As he approached the Town Gate a Deadman was being carried out for burial. His mother was a widow. This had been her only son. And a sizable crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her he felt compassion for her. And said to her don't cry. Then he came close and he touched the coffin and the pallbearers halted.

0:48 He said young man. I say to you get up. The dead man sat up and began to speak. And Yeshua gave him to his mother. They were all filled with awe and gave glory to God saying a great prophet has appeared Among Us. And God has come to help his people. This report concerning him spread throughout all Judea. and the surrounding region Now before we get into the text any more than I just did, let me let me give us a brief review. So that we have a little bit of understanding. As a reminder the purpose for the whole book of Luke can be found in the

1:35 first couple verses primarily and for in verse 4 of chapter one. Let me just reread those verses for us Therefore your Excellency. He's speaking to Theophilus since I have carefully investigated all these things from the beginning. It seemed good to me that I too should write you an accurate in ordered narrative. so that or for the purpose of so that you might know how well-founded are the things about which you have been taught. Another translation says this so that you may know for sure. the truth of the words that you have been taught

2:20 in other words Theophilus has already been taught. the message it seems he might have even already. been a Believer or a follower of Yeshua But perhaps some trials arose or the the the days grew dark or something. We don't know what perhaps caused him to lose a little faith. And so Luke decides to write to Theophilus. so that you may know for sure. The truth of the words that you have been taught it seems to me that we can actually for those of us who are followers of Yeshua, we can take the same. Stance in receiving

3:07 what Luke is writing? Because Luke is writing to encourage the faith of Theophilus. And if we have some moments which by the way, all of us do Is you shouldn't be embarrassed if you have a moment or a crisis of Faith because everybody does. I I would ask you to raise your hand if you've experienced that except everybody's hands should go up. So I don't need to ask you to raise your hand. Because everybody experiences it at one moment or another and Theophilus most excellent Theophilus. Perhaps as having one of those moments and perhaps someone in here is having a moment like that and

3:53 we can take Luke's words. as encouragement to build our faith So that we may know for sure the truth of the words that we have been taught. What we see is the inbreaking of the Kingdom of Heaven. There's a two-fold operation in the inbreaking of the Kingdom of Heaven number one. It's the king returning. But number two it's the people bringing their lives back into alignment with the King. Or the operation of the Kingdom. In other words walking in his ways. And what we see in Luke chapter 4 is Luke frames the mission of Yeshua in the context of

4:40 Isaiah 61. The spirit of the Lord was was upon him was anointed him to announce good news to the poor. He would the Yeshua was sent. To Proclaim freedom for the imprisoned renewed sight for the blind released those who have been crushed. And proclaim a year of favor of the Lord. So the question before us is who is Yeshua. We so far have heard the account of his birth. We've heard accounts of different miracles. We've heard accounts of Yeshua setting holoca for his disciples for his tomadine. In other

5:26 words. This is how you should walk it out. This is how you should live your life in this circumstance. You were to make this decision. And this is how you were to walk it out and apply it in your lives. And now we are hearing accounts. concerning the reach of yeshua's authority So this week we're in verses 11 through 17 on Wednesday. We did versus one through 10. Is that right? One through 10? Yeah. We did one through 10 and we saw Yeshua is Authority extend even over a Roman Centurion. By the way, it stands to note. I'm pretty sure Dr. Daniel. Did this

6:13 on Wednesday night? But it stands to note for each of us that Roman centurions represented the enemies of Israel. and Yeshua heals his servants upon his request. In other words Yeshua is putting into action the statements that he made in the previous chapter. Where he said pray for your enemies? extend compassion to them we see today the reach of yeshua's authority over death itself. Luke is using accounts stories

6:59 to show Yeshua in action fulfilling his mission and his action and fulfilling the mission causes everyone who witnesses it. to glorify God in other words, yeshua's actions bring glory to God. And in these stories in particular here in chapter 7 will be here in chapter 7 for I think maybe two more weeks two or three more weeks particularly in Chapter 7. We see a connection. Between these stories and the presence or absence of faith.

7:44 Faith by the way, according to Dr. Darrell Bock involves humility. gratitude and service all three elements at work at the same time humility. You see it in in the Roman Centurion the Roman Centurion. Is in charge by the way? And yet he recognizes yeshua's authority over him. He recognizes his position in relation to Yeshua and asks for Yeshua. Don't even come to my house. Just say the words. He says because I'm a man under Authority and I know that when I speak my servant

8:31 does therefore I know that when you speak. It will come to pass. Yeshua responds and says, I haven't seen Faith like this in all of Israel. Faith involves humility the recognition of our place in regards or in relation to Yeshua It involves gratitude. I think perhaps gratitude might be the most difficult. For us in our society today. not because we don't have but because we have nearly everything.

10:06 us. That is the shape of Yeshua. And when we cram it and we stuff it full of all these other things. Whatever they may be. Yeshua is so big that the whole never gets filled. And all of that were left wanting for more. and when we want for more we become is the word ungrateful is that is ungrateful a word we become grateful for what we actually have. It's just part of our psychology are the way our mind works.

10:51 Or we also become anxious for what we have. Oh, no. Did you see on next door that there were 33 burglaries in the seven neighborhoods around my house? Did you see the video camera caught that person on the trying to steal my mail out of my mailbox? I got to go watch that video again. It's really disturbing. But then I got to show it to all of my friends too. Because it's so disturbing. I have to tell everyone. So that we all can be disturbed. together I'm not saying you shouldn't take proper precautions. But the reality everything that we have is dust.

12:26 in the the symbiotic relationship that it that it has and how it grows faith. And so what we see today we come to our text today. we begin to see the action Of Yeshua hearing believing and obeying and also those with him. So let's take a look here at the first two verses the next day Yeshua accompanied by his tomadine and a large crowd. By the way his tomodine or how many? 12 and a large crowd and we know that there's also some other close disciples that are not necessarily among

13:14 the twelve, but they're always there present. So and a large crowd so you can imagine this at the beginning of chapter 7 Yeshua is in Capernaum. He enters Capernaum and he shares a message to all the people. Now, he's leaving Capernaum. If you guys Joshua if you can pop that map up for me on the screen. He's leaving Capernaum. And he's traveling down to a place called Naim. So Naim or name in some of your versions is right there in that kind of bottom center. And you see Capernaum is right up at the top of the lake.

14:01 So you see Yeshua, you can even see the path that Yeshua probably would have taken just kind of following that road and going down to Naim. You can leave that up for a minute Joshua just so everybody has some geographical idea of what's going on. By the way, Luke uses geography probably more than anybody else and he it allows you to understand where Yeshua is what he's doing in the in the grander scheme of things as well. Yeshua left Capernaum and went to Naim Naim is about seven kilometers Southwest of Mount Tabor. So Joshua, if you go to that little shade that I showed you earlier right there just above the arrow that right. There is Mount Tabor Mount to bore is a it's it's

14:47 a hill that just kind of like pops out of the ground. I think it might be I can't remember what the elevation of it is. But it's it's just kind of rounded Hill it just like pops up out of the ground and it's actually the geographical marker or the delineates the boundary of three different tribal territories. of the tribes of Israel So this is where it's the intersection of the tribes the tribal territories of naphtalesevulin and issachar where they all meet. And you also see just to the upper left of Naim or name you see Nazareth. So I think Nazareth may be about 10 or 15 10 or 12 kilometers.

15:34 So in terms of kilometers, we're really talking about four miles seven kilometers about four miles 10 kilometers is about five and a half miles. So you can think about how in terms of distance what we're looking at here. Mount Tabor just for all of us because I know that we don't all spend all the time reading the Bible that we probably should but Mount Tabor is where Barack goes to war and Deborah commands him to go to war and he defeats the armies of cicera. and cicera flees and and goes gets so tired. He goes to take a nap in a tent.

16:19 and the woman of the tent Yael dispatches of quickly I think I think I can say that. She that's right. That's funny. That was a good fun. She took a steak. And not not the kind you eat like a nail. And drove it through his head. And one shot because you know, if it took more than one shot he would have woken up. By the way, that's a like a powerful. 17:05 But that's some of the history and there's other things that have occurred here at Mount Tabor. and in fact it's not named but I think it's from must be the third century. CE some of the church fathers, it's fine. He's fine. Some of the church fathers attribute the Mount of transfiguration where Yeshua and Moses and Elijah all come together in Peter says, let's build some sukas. and as being Mount to bore So you understand kind of what's going on Israel. You cannot take a step in Israel without hitting some historical landmark. That is centuries or Millennia old.

17:53 And that was even true during the time of Yeshua. So Yeshua is walking and he's coming to Naim to name. He's approaching the Gate of the city. Mommy's down there if you want mommy, you have to go down there. He's approaching the Gate of the city. And he's accompanied by his tomodine in a large crowd. And coming opposite direction from him. Is a burial procession also with a large crowd. So it stands to note just for while we're putting ourselves into the story so we can understand what's happening. There's two large crowds.

18:38 That are approaching one another. now you might be able to say that one crowd. Is coming with life eternal? And the other is mourning death. and so what we see is when they meet they meet at the person of Yeshua himself. Yeshua stops, and he takes notice. He sees the mother of the dead man. And Luke tells us that the mother is a widow.

19:24 Who necessarily by necessity of definition by the loss of her son leaves her entirely alone? For Luke, and really for us it was particularly in that time, but you can even make the argument it extends to today that she represented the totally powerless within Society. Those who? were without defense those who need someone. To stand up on their behalf. And when the Lord saw this is what verse 13 says and when the Lord saw her he felt compassion for her and said

20:09 Don't Cry. Then he came up and he touched the coffin and the pallbearers came to a standstill. He said young man. I tell you get up. The dead man sat up and began speaking and Yeshua gave him to his mother. Woo. Hey, you're loud buddy. If you're up if you're hey, if you're up here with me, you have to be quiet. Okay? No, are you gonna go back down or do you want to stay with me and be quiet? Okay. Thank you. By the way, that was him saying quiet quietly. Adony, Yeshua, our Lord. Yeshua is moved by compassion. 20:54 can go see Mr. Shawn. That's fine. Our Lord Yeshua was moved by compassion for this woman. He saw her in her current state was moved in a dressed her. Then he came and he touched the coffin. Likely the coffin is not what we think of today. likely the coffin is is maybe a couch with the with the body on it or a What do you call it a? a beer, is that what it's called? I think it's like a plank with the body laying on top something is it's likely like that not necessarily an enclosed.

21:40 Coffin or casket that we think of today. Partially, let me tell you how I get to that conclusion. I get there by by two ways. Number one Jewish tradition is that you buried the body within 24 hours. In fact, it comes from the Torah. It says don't let the body sit overnight. So it's likely that the young man had just passed. I don't know. Maybe it's been an hour or two or three but they're they're now going out to bury the body Before Sunset. You can. Hey, buddy, you have to pick a place man. Oh, I see come here. Come here.

Jewish tradition is that you bury the the tradition and also scripture that you bury the body within 24 hours or even that same day. The tradition was true then and it's true even to today. Although today. It's kind of expanded a little bit to as soon as possible. But you know now we we live all around the world and relate in regards to the rest of our family. So sometimes we have to make allowances for family to come in.

23:18 Yeshua comes up and he touched the coffin. I do wonder if it's since it's not necessarily a coffin like what we think if he touched the body. because as we read in next week's Torah portion that makes him unclean for a week But you know, what Yeshua does this all the time? comes into contact with those That are forbidden to come in contact with the lepers. The unclean at some point we'll get to the passage where the woman with the issue of blood. All of these would have rendered him unclean and yet Yeshua is the source of all

And can never ever be unclean. life flows from him not to him Yeshua goes up and he touches the coffin is what the text says. or the casket the funeral couch The reason I do want I I do basically come to the conclusion that there's no cover on it. Is in the next couple verses the young man sits up. It doesn't talk about removing the lid or or anything like that. It's just

24:51 The young man sits up and begins to speak. with with no hindrance the Paul bearers come to a stop. You can imagine Yeshua has come up. He's he's extended compassion to the woman. He comes to the madness. This seems to be would be relatively normal. Come to maybe perhaps extend condolences. Instead he comes and he touches. the coffin All of a sudden people realize something is different. We don't know actually at this point if they recognize Yeshua or not. But something is different in the pallbearers stop.

25:37 And now you can imagine every eye in the crowd. is looking they're looking to see what will happen. What is going on? This is bizarre. This guy does he know what he's doing? And Yeshua commands the man to get up. The dead man sat up and began speaking. And then the text says Yeshua gave him to his mother. Now this story reminds me and should remind us. of at least one other story of Resurrection that's found in First Kings. And in First Kings, there's a widow and her

26:22 son died in Elijah comes. And Elijah stretches himself out on top of the boy three times and cries out to the Lord. And the boy was resurrected. And then Elijah took the child and gave him to his mother. You see the the very similarities in the way the text. Is written. But it's also not limited to Elijah. Elisha also has something very similar in first key or in second Kings chapter 4 Elisha comes to the shunamite woman and he raises her son from the dead by laying on him and breathing into his mouth in Second Kings. It says that he looked his eyes to his eyes his nose to his nose his mouth to his mouth and laid on the

27:10 boy in breathed into him. And the boy came back to life. So it does seem reminiscent. What Yeshua does of let me take a phrase here of prophets of old some of the great prophets of old. except if I can call it the work that the prophets of old did was much more intense and elaborate than Yeshua. Elijah Elisha both laid on the boy They did all of these things. They cried out to the Lord Yeshua looks at him and says get up. Now it's kind of how I sounded my children in the morning when or you

27:55 know when they're asleep or something. Or perhaps some of you have teenagers and it's 12:30 in the afternoon. In the summer, of course. But these resurrections took much more work than the one that Yeshua did when Yeshua spoke to the boy in the boy sat up. And what we have now is the result found in Verses 15 through 17 the dead man, sat up began to speak and Yeshua gave him to his mother. They were all filled. This is now the crowd they were all filled with awe and gave glory to God saying a great prophet has appeared Among Us and God has come to help his people.

28:41 This report concerning him spread throughout all Judea and the surrounding region. the two crowds have now formed one. And Yeshua is at the center and he says get up. And the young man gets up and begins to speak. And then Yeshua gave him to his mother again. The wording is very similar to what happens with Elijah. The people are filled with awe and they give glory to God saying a great prophet. Has appeared Among Us. Why would they say this? Well number one, they just witnessed the resurrection relatively similar in even verbally the similar to

29:27 Elijah and to Elisha. One of the great prophets is Among Us. And then they say God Has Come. to help his people the people recognize that these actions that this particular action at this moment represents God stepping into history and intervening in the lives of his people. For a different result than they were expecting. And when they see this they recognize why Why do they recognize as God stepping into history because it's not the first time.

30:13 God has done this repeatedly throughout the Tanakh the history of the Jewish people God steps in. Makes a tweak. And shifts the story. And they see him doing it again and saying God surely God is is doing something now. This young man was dead and now he is alive. the woman replied to Elijah Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word in your mouth is truth. Again. It's relatively similar to what the what the crowd is responding

31:00 at this point. There's some striking similarities between the two stories. And then we're told that the report about Yeshua continued to spread it spread throughout all of Judea and the surrounding region you saw earlier on the map the surrounding region. By the way, this was before cell phones and social media. This was Word of Mouth spreading What had happened? Anybody ever played the game telephone? When you play the game telephone and you have 20 people. Does the end result reflect? I I could say precisely or I don't even have to include an adverb here the first the first

31:48 part. never or if it does you got some really good people who are in that line. But you can imagine the the reports are now circulating. Through Judea and the surrounding regions through through all of this area. through the Galilee The reports are spreading. What is known about Yeshua? is spreading so what does this mean for us today? I want to take a look at just a few things here number one. Faith is important. Luke is providing examples from the life of Yeshua that will strengthen the faith of Theophilus.

32:37 We talked about faith involving humility gratitude and service. If they if Luke provides these examples to to strengthen theophilus's Faith, then it stands to reason that it's just strengthen our faith as well. our faith muscle You know, we all have muscles we have some of us as bigger muscles than others. We have muscles. It takes muscles to walk. It takes muscles to breathe. It takes muscles to eat good barbecue for lunch. It takes muscles to digest the good barbecue sandwiches. I'm just talking about barbecue now. You're making myself hungry. That's good. Actually if I make myself hungry because that means the service

Our faith muscle also needs to be strengthened. all the time It's not a muscle that you can just sit on the shelf and then come back and be like, okay, let me where's that muscle? I need I need to use that one today because if you do that. Then it won't be it won't have strength in it. It has to be used daily every day. It's like when we use our leg muscles, you know, we use our leg muscles or if we go play sports some of us. Don't play sports very often anymore. And when we go play sports, we're called Weekend Warriors and we end up hurting ourselves.

34:08 You know where we try to beat our our teenage Sons? And races and sprints. I don't have teenage son. So obviously I'm not talking about myself. But our faith muscle needs to be exercised in order to be strengthened. We can't just like pump strength in. Okay today God. I need some strength. Give me some strength. He doesn't work like that. That's not the way muscle building works. Generally speaking. We need to hear the Lord. We need to believe what he has said and then we need to obey him and put it into action. So now we come into this story. Are we aware?

34:58 Of what or where the Lord is leading us today in our daily lives. Are we even aware of his involvement in our daily lives? Do we recognize his provision? both now and in the generations prior perhaps even in the same location as Mount Tabor Mount Sabor, is that right? Yeah, I think so. the events in this story that we just read occur not to not too distant from the same place other biblical stories of Faith have occurred. Sometimes we just need to find out what's going on around us. Maybe even what happened before us. I

And if you think that's impossible, then you don't know our God. He has worked everywhere before none of us are the

And the faith of those around you where you are. Are we here's another question I have are we prepared to hear Yeshua Speak Life into us. When Yeshua speaks life into the dead man, it also revived the Dead Man's mother. You think about that? She lost her only son. She was a widow. There was no

41:11 one left with her. For those of you who are mothers and even if you aren't a mother you can understand what it would be to be left. alone When Yeshua revives the dead man, it revives her. She may not be in appearance dead, but she is that way inside. And what ways are we dead in our lives? And we need Yeshua to bring life and Speak Life into them. And if you answer there's no way. Not one then. I would challenge you to go back and ask again. Because there's always some way.

For they shall be filled with joy with laughter. and now he's a he's faced with the situation that is just like that, you know. more often than not when I share something from the stage or when you share an encouraging word to someone else. You'll be challenged. Very quickly. To see if your words actually match what you are going to do. Yeshua says comfort those who mourn in for for they will

In the result of it is when Yeshua is involved in the activity. undeniable miracles happen both then and now why do why do undeniable miracles happen? Our people went through the Red Sea.

43:30 Literally and I don't mean that as a millennial or gen zier. literally the sea split and the children of Israel walked through on dry land. You know, it splits it makes sense. The reason it would be wet, but it's not wet. It's dry when they walk through. They eat bread from heaven. and quail They walk through the Wilderness for 40 years and their sandals never wear out. Did those Miracles strengthen the faith of the people?

44:18 No, because Miracles aren't meant to strengthen our faith Miracles are meant to draw the non-believer. To see what is happening. And to give glory to God. I help sometimes if they strengthen our faith, too. But their primary purpose is to be an example to everyone watching that's in the crowd. Everyone that's outside of that perimeter who has no relationship with Yeshua. No relationship with the god of Israel. It's at that moment when God will do a miracle that is undeniable. And the people will go. Huh? What?

45:05 That dude was dead. That person was blind. That person didn't have an arm and it just grew back. Why is that it's to bring glory to the god of Israel. from now and forevermore to draw the attention of those who were watching. so the question then in our daily lives when we're walking are we drawing attention to ourselves? Through our actions or are we drawing attention to the god of Israel? That's a challenging question.

45:51 That all of us should ask every day. Because if we magnify ourselves. God gets smaller and smaller. He doesn't actually get smaller. But he begins to disappear from our from our vision from our field of sight of you. And then the more he disappears The more we really do think it's our own. of our own doing we see in Hebrews chapter 11. What I and others call the Hall of faith.

46:38 those who had faith strong faith and put it into action. the Hall of faith is full of individuals from the Tanakh who exercised their faith for the purpose of following the god of Israel. We even see Barak mentioned who fought at Mount Tabor. Which was just down the road from where Yeshua. brought back to life this dead man here in Leviticus in Luke 7 So it's important for us to walk out of here today. And to exercise our faith muscle.

47:24 And in exercising our faith muscle, we give glory to God every moment along the way. When we hear when we believe and when we obey him in other words when we exercise our faith, that's if I can take that and parse out faith when we hear believe and obey. Obeying implies doing like action. When we hear believe and Obey we exercise our faith and the result will be people around us watching glorifying God. If they're not glorifying God, maybe we should check just in case and see what they're seeing through us. It's always healthy just to check and make sure that people aren't seeing us.
