How Do We Live?

0:00 We are continuing in the book of Luke, Luke, chapter 21, if you can believe it. We are three chapters from the end of the book of Luke. Uh, and then we'll get into the book of Acts. Before we get into Luke 21, I just want to remind us as I do every week, uh, a little bit about what we have learned and where we are going. So Luke is the author, or as I've said before, is the scribe inspired by the Holy Spirit to write down this account.

0:48 He writes to Theophilus and he says, he writes to Theophilus. And we had a discussion multiple times on, on who Theophilus could be, whether it's a a, a a, um, specific person, or whether it's a generic audience, uh, um, the, the lovers of God, if you will. Uh, and I've shared my perspective before, and I don't need to share it again today at least, but he writes to Theophilus and he says in Luke chapter one, verses three through four, he says this, he says, therefore, your excellency, he's laying out the purpose for, for what he's writing to Theophilus. Therefore, your excellency. Since I have carefully investigated all of these things from the beginning, it seemed good to me that I too should write you an accurate and ordered

1:37 narrative so that, so this is where we get our purpose. A purpose statement is the, so that statement, this is the why. Why am I writing to you so that you might know how well founded or how for sure are the things about which you have been taught. In other words, let me stop there and say this. It seems clear enough to me that I can, I, first of all, I I hold the, in this case, it does matter that I hold the Theophilus as a specific individual, but it seems clear enough to me actually by this statement that Luke is writing to Theophilus, and that Theophilus is already a follower of Yeshua. Why? Because he wants you, him to know for sure the truth of the words, which he has been taught already. You see what,

2:24 so if he's already knows the words now, he needs to be encouraged, uh, like what we were doing with yelling to the back there a few minutes ago. He needs his faith strengthened and to be encouraged. I don't know, maybe he's going through trials, maybe he's going through some difficulties. We don't know that, uh, we don't know that specifically, but we can make a couple jumps, but not today. And so he write, Luke writes this book, and he includes these accounts of the inbreaking, of the kingdom of God through the early chapters of Luke. And, and really through the mid chapters as well, we see these, these healings. The, the, the, the deaf becoming able to hear, the blind being able to see the ones with withered arms, they're,

3:12 they're limbs growing back. We see these, these, uh, we see the lepers healed of their leprosy. We see, we see all of these different accounts, which is evidence or signs of the inbreaking, of the kingdom of God. But what we also see are these people turning their lives and, and, and, uh, molding their lives closer to the way the Yeshua walks. So the kingdom of heaven is, is going to in, is in breaking in two different ways. It's coming down, but it's also come the ones who are on the, on the, on the earth coming into alignment with him. And then the two shall meet and Yeshua will reign on here as it is already in heaven.

4:01 We have discussed a location and timing all the way through this. And, and so I'm not going to skip today, but today this passage takes place. Yeshua is, uh, on the Temple mount in Jerusalem within four days of the beginning of Matza or Passover. So he, uh, there's evidence that says that when he comes down Mount Olivette on the donkey, that he, uh, that on the colt, that he comes down on the 10th of the month, which is the same day that, uh, for Passover. It is the, on the 10th of the month where you're bringing the Lamb into the household, uh,

4:48 for later sacrifice. And so you can see that the sacrifice occurs several days later. But so we're, we're within this time period from the 10th of, of the, of the first month, uh, to Passover. So we're right in that time period. He entered the temple grounds. I, as I spoke about, I think it was two weeks ago, he entered the temple grounds and he entered the temple grounds. If I, if I can use this language. Um, he entered it hot, and I don't mean temperature, although it probably was that also he was riled up because there's money changers. There's, um, there's, uh, all of this going on in the temple courts.

5:33 Why we talked about the why because they're taking up the space that's designated for the nations to come and worship God. And by them taking up space, it's actually replacing the nation's ability to come and worship the Lord, or, or, uh, it, it, it's, I mean, it's a, it's a different kind of replacement theology. It, it's a displacement, displacement theology. I'm making things up up here. It's displacing the nations and they're not able to worship the Lord where it is designated for them to worship. And so he turns over all of this, and we go, he goes through all of this, and we also know, by the way, I'm, I'm giving you the how we know where, uh, and when Yeshua is at this moment, because in Luke 22, we'll get there in,

6:21 in a couple weeks. Luke 22, verse one. It says, it says this, the days leading up to the festival of Matza known as Passover. So we know we're still before Passover, but we're also after when he enters into Jerusalem. And so this, over the last week and a half, we've covered Luke 20, Luke 20 man, Luke 20 is a hard chapter in Luke 20. Yeshua is becoming more and more forthright in his, uh, parables, his illustrations that are being spoken against the leaders of Jerusalem at this time. Uh, in, in in chapter 20, it says, uh, it starts with the, the ruling kohanim,

7:09 the the Taurus scholars or scribes and the elders and Yeshua's coming against them and speaking. In fact, he gives us one, this one parable about tenant farmers, who in the end, they're all replaced. They're, they're, they're, they're done away with. And then all of the leaders right there get really upset and it says they sought to kill him. Why? Because they know exactly what Yeshua is teaching, that they've messed up. I, I don't know about you, but it's really difficult when somebody comes to you and says, man, you messed up royally. It's a difficult thing to absorb. And if, if, if you

7:57 live in a more prideful world, it's unable to be absorbed at all. Uh, I was trying to think about how to say that nicely. I don't know that there is. And then Yeshua ends chapter 20 with this. He says, beware of the scribes, beware of the scribes who walk around in long robes. They love greetings in the marketplace, the best seats in the synagogues, the places of honor at the feasts, they devour the widows houses and make long prayers as a show, these men will receive greater condemnation. Again, we should ask why. And the why is because what they put forward is different than what's on the inside. And Yeshua, I if, if nothing else,

8:42 what we've seen throughout the book of Luke is Yeshua quickly condemns everyone who puts a show on the outside that doesn't match the inside. And so that's the context where we come to here to Luke chapter 21. By the way, Luke chapter, the end of 19 through the beginning of 22, takes place over a four day period. So if, I mean, it's a lot of text to read, but just think about it. It's a four day period. It's less than a week. It's as if it occurred on Wednesday and, and now we're here, we are on Shabbat. It's just important to keep things like that in your mind because we think that so much time has gone by and, and maybe Yeshua is addressing something different,

9:30 but riddled throughout these, and we're gonna talk about it in a minute, riddled throughout these chapters, Yeshua talks about stones over and over and over again. It is not just because he has this thing in his life for big stones. He, it's, he's there. He's looking at the stones of the temple. He realizes who he is, and I'm getting ahead of myself and my message. But hey, anyways, he's looking at all of this, and it's all occurring at the same moment in like a, in a, in a length end conversation, if you will. And he's going from one audience to a next and speaking, and it's as if it's just all coming out of him. So when we read this, it's not Yeshua prepared something. This Shabbat, he waited for two months and then there was something on this Shabbat,

10:15 and he waited for another month. And there was something on this Shabbat, this is day after day after day conversation after conversation. It's quick, it's rapid fire. Luke, up until his point seems to have gone through a, a, a lengthy period of time. But now we are in the rapid fire section of Luke. So we come here to Luke 21 and it says, then Yeshua looked up, okay, wait, let's stop. I'm going to, everybody who knows me is gonna laugh cuz I always get stuck in the first or the second verse. Then Yeshua looks up, wait a second, what was Yeshua just doing? He just was having a conversation with his disciples. Remember I just told you that He said, beware of the, of the tourist tribes.

11:01 Why? Because Yeshua's there, all of the people are listening. And Yeshua says particularly, he's addressing his disciples. Now he's just given this, this, uh, this, um, hmm, couple stories concerning the, the Kohanim and the, the, the sades and the Taurus scribes. And then he, he's changing his audience and he looks at his disciples and he says, beware of the TA scholars. And he says, they're Taurus scribes. And he says, why? And then it's at that point, Yeshua looks up. So just think about that. Yeshua is teaching, he's teaching his alma and he looks up and he saw the rich dropping their gifts into the treasury box.

11:47 He also saw a poor widow dropping in two small copper coins. And he said, truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all the rest for all these put in their gifts from their surplus. But she, out of her poverty, put in all she had to live on. So the first question before I get into this is, did she put in more than all the rest? I, I think it's fair to say no. Therefore, what we have to look at this is, is understand what the lesson Yeshua is teaching because they're two small copper coins and he says he sees the rich putting in their, they're, they're, uh, offerings, ties, whatever it was they have, they had treasury boxes.

12:35 I imagine it wasn't too dissimilar to the way we have broche that along the wall they had boxes, uh, where you would put their, your offerings, your monetary offerings, and some people might make a show of it and others might not. And so Yeshua says this widow's contribution is more Than the wealthy who were putting in their, in their, in their offerings right? Now, I just want you to remember what was the prior statement when Yeshua was addressing his disciples? Beware of the scribes who like to look good in public, but they devour whose house? The widow's house. And now Yeshua immediately looks up and he sees a widow.

13:23 She's putting in her two copper coins and, and she's standing in contrast to the wealthy who are, seem to be at least in this passage, making a show of putting their offering in the box. So these stories are tied. By the way, I if you haven't caught the tie yet, the they're tied. I'm just gonna flat out tell you they're tied. Almost everything in Luke is tied together. It's like this, this thread that runs throughout the book of Luke in, in, in topics reemerge later on. And, and it closes off the story from earlier Yeshua's looking up. He just has been addressing the disciples. He's cautioning him, them against the type of people who make a show of everything. And then he sees this widow who's not making a show in contrast to those who are

14:11 making a show. He's pointing out, or he's confirming, if you will, his prior story concerning the severity of the judgment against those who make a show versus those who are, if I can use this word, authentic or sincere in what they're doing. He sees this poor widow drop in two small copper coins according to Alfred Erim and the life and times of Jesus, the two copper coins were the equivalent of what are called two Peru. And it was not lawful to contribute a less amount. In other words,

14:56 that was the minimum donation that was receivable. I mean, when we talk about minimum donation receivable, we're, uh, I don't know about you, but I'm thinking about a couple, couple coins with Lincoln on the head, right? Isn't Lincoln on the penny? Yes, I thought so. Couple, couple coins that are going in their copper even and, and, and like, those are small, but the two is the minimum donation for a lawful donation. It would be the equivalent of 1 96 of a dinar, which is the equivalent of five minutes of labor at minimum wage.

15:42 So I don't know what minimum wage is today. Is it $9, $7? It's like $15 up in Seattle. We can go with that one. Um, Don't quote Seattle. Don't quote Seattle. It's about seven. It's about $7. So five minutes of labor at $7 an hour is, uh, one 12 is is like 25 cents or something like that, or 35 cents. Somebody else. If you, if you do math bit quicker than I do in better, that's fine. We're not talking about a lot of money here. But Yeshua knows that it's, she puts in all that she has,

16:31 she puts in more than all the rest. Why? And he says, why? Because all the rest put in their gifts from their surplus. But she, in her poverty, this is all she has to live on. And she puts it in the offering box. The amount matters less than the percentage, if I can put it that way. The percentage explains the condition of the heart, not the amount, not the amount. I, I once went and toured a, a college when I was back in the touring college days. And um, this college I went to, their founder, uh, lived on a principle. He said, look, if if God can live on 10%,

17:17 if I'm supposed to give to God 10%, that's my tithe or whatever. He says, if God can live on 10%, so can I. And he lived on 10% and gave away 90% of his income. I I think for the duration of his life. And, and now has a school bearing his name and remem in remembrance of him, but also other people that have been affected. But it's the percentage that that is, is an important thing here. Yeshua recognizes that this woman is giving all that she has. So all that she has, it's not even 90%, it's a hundred percent. This is everything. In other words, if I can put it this way, everything that she has,

18:05 and she's dropped it in the box. This is the definition of sacrificial giving, of offering up one's life as a sacrifice before the Lord and letting him be pleased. It's reminiscent of Abraham, of, of the way Abraham conducted his life. He conducted his life as if it were unto the Lord. Now, Abraham was much wealthier than this, this poor widow. But, but Abraham was always, if you will open for everyone coming in, he, he waited at the edge of his tent for someone to come and just so he could kill a lamb and, and, and, and, and eat cheeseburgers with, with the Lord.

18:56 Sorry, hashtag no sorry, but Kurds and way go check out Book of Genesises. Anyways, off topic, Yeshua is looking here at the motivation of the heart. He sees the motivation of the heart. Again, Yeshua always looks at the motivation of the heart. And when we, when we think that he's only looking at the outside, we can begin to deceive ourselves because literally that's what we do. And he does the exact opposite. He looks at what, what it is that that person what's driving them. And this widow, she's giving her everything to the Lord.

19:44 And he looks at the others who make a show of giving something, but it doesn't even affect them because it's out of their surplus. It's not, not even out of what they need to live. Let's continue on. And while some were talking about the temple, by the way, we're gonna go through verse nine. And if you've read chapter 21 before, you're gonna realize that we're stopping right in the middle of a segment. When I divided these portions up, I'm not entirely certain what led me to include verses five through nine with verses one through four, but apparently I did. So we're going there today, but we're gonna stop and we'll continue the conversation over the next week or so. And while some were talking about the temple,

20:31 how it was decorated with beautiful stones and offerings, Yeshua said, as for these things you were looking at, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another, everyone will be torn down. And they question him saying, teacher, so when will these things happen? What will be the sign that these things are about to take place? And he said, watch out that you are not let astray for many will come in my name saying I am he, and the time is near, do not follow them. And when you hear of wars and chaos, do not be terrorized for, these things need to happen first, but the end will not come at once.

21:17 So what we see here is first of all, if I can summarize, it's what's going to happen, when is it gonna happen? And then don't fear God, just that's my kind of three points for this, for this little section. So what's gonna happen? There's some people there. I I presume that they're his disciples. They're sitting there talking about the temple. Why are they talking about the temple? They're in the midst of the most, uh, grandiose building in the entire world at that point. I don't know if you guys remember, but I, I shared a couple weeks ago that there were rulers from around the world that would, that would travel to the temple just to behold its beauty.

22:04 And they're standing there or sitting there maybe beholding its beauty. And in fact, they've been, they've been listening to Yeshua teaching about the temple up until this point. And they, and so they're sitting there talking about the stones. They're talking about how it was decorated with these beautiful stones and offerings. Maybe they're even listening to him just talk about this offering that the widow gave. Yeshua is still with them, but the if, if you will, the, the, the cinematographer lens has shifted and is now pointing at his disciples. And it seems to me like they're looking around the temple in wonder

22:52 and they're making these comments or or remarking on the wonder in the beauty of the temple. They're commenting on the stones and the offerings. Let's just stop for a moment and just remember what Yeshua just said in the prior conversation, in a prior conversation in chapter 20, Yeshua says, this is what has been written. The stone, which the builders rejected, has become the chief cornerstone. Everyone who falls on that stone will be shattered, but the one upon whom it falls, it will crush him. He, Yeshua was speaking about the stone, which the builders had rejected,

23:37 referring to himself, but looking at the temple, And he's talking about these magnificent stones in this, the cornerstone falling upon those and crushing those who didn't believe in him. If you guys can pop up, just, uh, let's look at the first stone. These are, these are, this is at the hotel today. These are the stones. So this is a, an average height person, I don't know, five, six feet, something like that. You can see how big the stones are. These are the small ones, by the way. So if you guys can flip to the next picture, because I wanna show you this one. This is down in one of the tunnels. This stone is 41 feet wide and nearly 12 feet tall.

24:23 These stones, I don't even know what they wa what they estimate them to weigh at, but you can just imagine a stone that's 41 feet wide and 12 feet tall. And I, and if I remember right, uh, let's see here, I have Josephus records. The stones is having been 25 qubits in length or, or width, if you will, eight qubits in height and 12 qubits, uh, wide or deep if, if you will. So in other words, 12 to 60 feet in length, about 12 feet tall and about 16 feet deep. Man, that's a huge stone. I'm just thinking about death stone's about the size of this stage,

25:10 like the entire stage, but taller, but probably up to about here. That's one stone you imagine. I just want you to think of that stone when your shoe was talking about the stone that the builders rejected becoming the chief cornerstone, the chief, or the biggest cornerstone in that cornerstone. When it's set, you can do one of two things. You can fall on it and be broken, or you can have it fall on you and crush you. You see, when we fall on Yeshua, it, it breaks us purposefully. I mean, there's a lot of things about us that we have to break, but when we fall on him, it, it certainly breaks our molding.

25:58 These stones are, I, I don't if you ever get a chance to go to Jerusalem, this is just the support wall of the temple. This isn't even the temple that was, this is the support wall that held up the temple. And you can go there and, and it is, it's breathtaking to see the stones. And then you think about Yeshua speaking about stones all the time, and these disciples are commenting on the stones of the temple. And Yeshua says he inserts himself into their conversation

26:45 to share again what will happen to the temple. Everything will be torn down. Not one stone will be left upon another. Is Yeshua commenting on more than just the physical temple complex at this point? Is he commenting on his followers Scattering when he, when he goes through his crucifixion? I don't know, but there could be a warning in here. But the, the overt thing is Yeshua is commenting that the temple complex, despite how beautiful it is and how magnificent it is,

27:31 it will be torn down and not one stone will remain on another. Now, I just want you to think about this. Che is not nearly a drop in the bucket as magnificent of what as what the temple would've been. But if I were to stand here and tell you, none of these stones are gonna remain on another, your, your first questions go, when? When's that gonna happen? Because I don't really wanna be inside like, let me be outside when that one happens. So you can see his disciples, they're asking questions just like the rest of us. When is that gonna happen? When are these things gonna happen? What's the sign that they're gonna happen?

28:17 It makes sense that they're asking for a sign. Because looking back, we know that this is one of the most tragic losses of life, the destruction of the temple in, in all of the innocent lives that get destroyed by Rome at that point. It's tragic. The, the, the crosses that were lining the roads in and out of Jerusalem with people hanging on them, The death, the terror that was happening, it makes sense that they would ask, what is the sign Yeshua says, watch out that you are not let astray. For many will come in my name saying I am he, and the time is near.

29:03 Do not follow them. And when you hear of the wars and chaos, do not be terrorized for these things need to happen first, but the end will not come at once. Yeshua says, do not be afraid. Watch out. Guard yourself. But don't be afraid. Don't be let astray by the people who come saying I'm here, or the time is near. What does Yeshua say about those people? Do not follow them. Don't be misled and place your trust or your hope in anyone else other than me. Not me, Ari Waldman, but you Sure?

29:50 And then he says, you're going to hear of wars and rumors of wars and chaos. Do not be terrorized. I I don't know about you guys, but there's a lot of wars and rumors of wars going on today. In fact, well, I'll, I'll I'll get there in a minute. He says, do not be terrorized. What does this tell us to be? What I mean, excuse me, what does this tell us? That there will be wars and rumors of wars. He says, there will be wars and rumors of wars, but don't be terrorized. It's not, there may be this and there may be that. No, he's saying there will be. He says, but do not be terrorized. These things have to happen. It's necessary for you to go through these trials.

30:38 So what does this mean for you and me? I have two different points that I wanna make. Number one is from the widow story. What is your heart's motivation? You can tell me what your heart motivation is, but in reality, only you and the Lord truly know what your heart motivation is. What's your motivation? What's the, what's deep inside of you that's motivating you? Are we really being self-sacrificial or are we just giving out of our surplus? And I'll tell you again, only you and Yeshua know that doesn't matter what you

31:24 tell me or what you don't tell me. It's only you and the Lord who know that. Secondly, what, what's going to happen and how should we treat these situations in our present day? This one gets a little bit more complicated. There are wars on every continent in the world right now except Antarctica. Unless you count penguin wars. Thank you. There are wars on every continent in the world today. I don't know if you guys really have thought about that. I certainly had not. I just decided last night, I was like, look, I know there's war going on in Russia and Ukraine and I know that

32:13 the leader of Russia gets up and is threatening, uh, global nuclear war and all of these things. And, and, and that's a lot just for us to comprehend. Um, at least, well, no, I shouldn't say that. Nevermind. I started just typing in Google. Hey, what, what wars are going on right now? Talked about 27 different civil wars that have been going for however many different years around the world. The casualties it list. There was a, I can't remember the website. I wish I would, I would've notated it. The casualties in the ones that were marked with a deep red had already had 10,000 casualties this year.

33:01 And, and the, and there was multiples of those on every continent in the United States, in the world wars and rumors of wars are existing today. In fact, just this week, Israel had nearly 1000 rockets hurled at it from neighboring cities and countries. It, it's very interesting to see the world's reaction to what happens in Israel. Um, I can tell you beyond the shadow of a doubt that if Fort Worth decided to hurl some rockets at Dallas,

33:52 Like, well, maybe, maybe if Canada decided to hurl, man, I don't know who I'm joking here. Can Canada, if Canada decided to throw some rockets across the border, one rocket, you know how quick we'd be at war Israel in one week, less than one week, experienced nearly a thousand rockets. One civilian casualty so far. And the world says, Israel, why are you, why are you provoking this? Why are you, why are you bringing war upon yourself? You're, you,

34:39 you should just give up everything. Well, by giving up everything, I, I think we, we know the end result of that which happened 75 years ago. Israel is the only nation in the world that's not permitted to exist as a nation in, uh, in the court of nations of the world as its own nation, as a Jewish nation.

35:24 It's not permitted to exist like that without somebody saying, oh, you have to give it this way. You have to give that away. And, and some people will say, well, they're just trying to go back to pre 1967. No, they're not. They're trying to go back to pre 1948. They're trying to go back to 19 45, 19 44 when the job wasn't done. The endgame of every organization that is hurling rockets is stated in their manifesto. And it says to drive the Jews into the sea until there's not one remaining. That's the endgame.

36:11 Doesn't matter what you believe, that they've already written that and put it out. So if that's the end game, what can we do? We battle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual principalities. How do we battle that? We battled it like we did earlier with worship, with prayer. I had a moment up here when, when Amanda was going and I was like, this is what warfare sounds like.

36:58 And it's an amazing feeling because it's as if you can hear the resounding elements of God winning. Yes. It doesn't matter what, how we fight in the physical. It matters how we fight in the spiritual. Sometimes we let our physical dictate everything else. We let our anger and our emotions dictate it. But I once had someone ask me, well, I think I said this about Passover.

37:46 I'll say it about Passover and I'll make another observation. God let his people suffer in Egypt for 400 years while he was trying to save those who were still in the land of Canaan. Why? Because he hoped that none would perish. And the same is true today, that those of us who are his followers may or may not now listen, in America, we have yet to suffer. Alright? Uh, and I feel very confident in saying that unequivocally, despite what some people may say over the last three years, we have yet to suffer in America.

38:32 The fact that we can get all be in here and have two or three chairs to put our Bibles on and our water bottles and be comfortable, we have yet to suffer. But there are Christians in the world, there are followers of Yeshua in the world that suffer to this day. It's all because the Lord is waiting for the maximum number of people that he can extend his grace to. He wants as many people to turn to him as possible. It's why we have to endure. So today it's time to take Yeshua's words to heart.

39:19 Do not be terrorized. Place your hope and trust in Yeshua today. And do not be discouraged, rather be encouraged because Yeshua said these things will happen. And this is our opportunity to strengthen one another, to come together and say, Hey, Yeshua said this was gonna happen. Don't be afraid. This is gonna happen. It might get worse. I mean, I I say might, I'm pretty sure the scriptures are pretty clear about it getting much worse than this. But It it,

40:08 it's going to get worse. I I don't, I don't mean that to discourage you. I mean that because Yeshua told us and because Yeshua told us we should expect it. And if we expect it, then we're not gonna get terrorized because it happens. Why? Because we expect it and we know that, oh man, I'm having a rough day today, so I'm just gonna call up so-and-so. Or you wake up at three o'clock in the morning with someone on your heart and you go, I don't know why that person's on my heart, but let me just pray for them. And then you call 'em later and tell them that you were praying for them. And they're like, oh man, three o'clock in the morning. That was a really tough time for me. This is all happening

40:54 whether we like it or not, whether we enjoy difficulty. I don't know about you guys. Not many of us enjoy difficulty. Let's be honest. I was, I was. No, I should stop telling stories cuz it's already 1243. Be encouraged. Yeshua told us this was all gonna happen. And what we have to do is encourage one another and do not be terrorized. Do not place your hope in any one other than him. But hold strong in your faith and in your hope in Yeshua, our in his soon and quick coming. Avin, Shabbat, Shama, my father in heaven. Lord, we come to you on this Shabbat

41:44 Lord, we seek your face, Lord, right now I lift up all of those war torn countries around the world, Lord. And in particular our during this season, we are lifting up Israel. Lord, I pray that your shalom would come to reign on this earth. That your peace, your wholeness, would begin to reign in each individual, Lord, that we would turn to you and you would return. Lord, we bless you and we praise you in this Shabbat Lord.
