00 We are continuing our series in the Book of Luke today In fact if you can believe it. I know we've been in Luke for a long time, but if you can believe it we're going to cover a whole chapter. today and next Shabbat and so we're going to start with the first third of the chapter this Shabbat and we'll Do the second third next Shabbat, but before we do that? as a reminder we talked last week and I and I talked every week about this.
47 It's always important for us to remember a few basic things about the Book of Luke First of all who wrote the Book of Luke and last week we talked about Luke being the author and and I made a I made a slight. Addendum, is that the right word? A slight notation for all of us. Luke is the author. That's who we credit with the authorship, but truly Luke is the Scribe. Who acts? upon the speaking of the spirit of God At least that's the view I hold because I hold Luke to be the inspired word of God. And if you believe that then actually the author is
34 really the spirit of God in Luke is just their scribing now. Listen we We say this or I say this it's true with every book in the Bible. from Genesis through revelation and it's really interesting because if you want to talk about authors not being the spirit, but the describes do you realize how many authors we have in the Bible? We have a lot. We have a lot of authors over a huge amount of time. That's now condensed into what we call one book. Or maybe a collection.
21 But we call it the Bible. So we talk about Luke being the author Luke has particular goals in mind. By which he's letting the spirit of the Lord direct him as he's as he's composing this letter. the recipient he's writing the Book of Luke 2 the shouldn't get over exaggerated. Be very very quiet. We're hunting rabbits in here. The the recipient of the of the letter of the Book of Luke. It's it's addressed to Theophilus. And Theophilus we talked about Theophilus who was Theophilus. I hold that he's a specific person.
09 And that Luke is writing to address some issues that he may have. And Luke gives us those issues to me and he sets out the whole purpose of the whole book. in verses three and four, so he writes and he says this Therefore your Excellency since I have carefully investigated all these things from the beginning It seemed good to me that I too should write you an accurate in ordered narrative so that you might know how well founded or how for sure. Are the things about which you have been taught? You see I hold the Theophilus was already a follower of Yeshua. And perhaps he's beginning to question. I don't know maybe maybe
56 not. But Luke is writing so that Theophilus can know how for sure are the things that he's already been taught. So because of that he's compiling this account in ordered an accurate account. Put together for this purpose of encouraging Theophilus in his faith. The Book of Luke deals with the inbreaking of the Kingdom of Heaven But the kingdom of heaven isn't just coming down. It's also coming up or coming into alignment here. So we talk about the inbreaking of the Kingdom. The kingdom is coming as the king comes rightly. So. But the kingdom is also coming up here as we bring our lives. Well, I'm now applying to our own context, but this
44 is true then and it's true now as we bring our lives into alignment with the King. So as we do that every time. Here's a very practical application for you. Every time you make a choice that brings yourself into alignment with Yeshua you advance the kingdom one step. and every time you make a decision that differs you take one step backward. It's very very simple very practical. But when we bring our lives into alignment with the King all of us together, it's slowly begins to advance the kingdom here and it will eventually meet at one point in time with Yeshua when he comes and sits upon the throne.
30 in Jerusalem as the Kingdom of Heaven comes down fully and as it fully arises or manifests itself within his body here So we took that's the this kind of the overarching everything with Luke we talked about just a couple chapters ago how Yeshua has turned his face set his face turned going up to Jerusalem. And so Yeshua was in the Galilee and is headed to Jerusalem, and he's somewhere in between right now. It maybe he's still in the Galilee or maybe he's right on the outskirts of Jerusalem. We don't know but he's somewhere going up to Jerusalem. and I laugh because
16 Specifically this week in chapter 15. I wonder if we're at mealtime again. You know because the last couple weeks we've been at mealtime. It says it was a Shabbat meal and in Yeshua said some Parables and and we covered that I think for two two weeks or so. I wonder actually for at mealtime again, which really makes me think. How Jewish Luke is because everything centers around a meal. And why do I think it's Meal Time? Because in 15 verse 2, excuse me. Wait, let's see. Yeah in verse 2. We're going to get into the text in a minute, but just this is
01 my this is my reasoning here. The the Pharisees and Torah Scholars are beginning to complain saying this man welcome Sinners and what? And eats with them. I wonder if he's eating with them right in front right now. So I wonder if it's a meal time. And at any good Jewish meal. There's a lively discussion. A lively discussion. It has various various limitations, but anyways Let's look at this whole text here for a moment. We're going to cover today versus 1 through 10 of chapter 15 in the Book of Luke. The tax collectors and sinners kept gathering around to hear Yeshua and the Pharisees and Torah teachers kept grumbling.
47 This fellow they said welcome Sinners and he even eats with them. So he Yeshua told them this Parable if one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them doesn't he leave the other 99 in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it. When he does find it, he joyfully hosts hoists it onto his shoulders. And when he gets home, he calls his friends and neighbors together and says come celebrate with me. Because I have found my lost sheep. I tell you that in the same way. There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who turns to God from his sins then over 99 righteous people who have no need to repent. verse 8 another example or another way we can say is Yeshua continues with another
34 example, what woman if she has 10 drachmas. We already talked about draculous today. We'll talk about a little bit later. And loses one of these valuable coins won't light a lamp sweep the house and search all over until she finds it and when she does find it she calls her friends and neighbors together and says come celebrate with me because I have found the drachma. I lost. And the same way I tell you there is Joy among God's angels when one sinner repents. so today we're looking we're what I'm doing today is we're going to do the first part of a two-part message. Part one is going to cover the first half of the chapter in part two. We'll cover the second half or Two thirds really is what it is.
22 And I'm titling both of these weeks. What counts So that's my message for this week. And for the the title for this weekend for next week. What counts? And we're going to get into that. But I want to look at this text for just a moment and we're gonna analyze the text along the way. So first of all, what's happening we're looking at the first I'm going to take here the first three verses What's happening? Well tax collectors and sinners are gathering around Yeshua. Yeah, everybody agree with me. I'm sorry, does everyone agree enough you all agree? I know you do. It also seems here's what's interesting. It also seems not only our tax collectors and sinners gathering around Yeshua.
08 But Pharisees and Taurus Scholars are gathering around Yeshua. Otherwise, how could we have this Exchange? Unless both are present. either Yeshua is inserting himself into the world of the Pharisees or The Pharisees see what's going on and they're coming. and gathering around Yeshua It's it's one or the other. It's not really a both. or neither In either case whichever one is actually the case there's grumbling going on. Yeshua is not inserting himself into the tax collecting world. He's not becoming a tax collector in the center. What he's doing is he's going and teaching and they're Gathering and following after him.
54 And if that's the case, then he is probably at least partially inserting himself into the fair sayic world. As a matter of a challenge to see what's going on. And what happens they complain? by the way some of you are Jewish and some of you are not but this is our people's problem. Getting back to Moses. well really dating back even farther, but We like to complain. quite a bit and it also often costs us in the long run. but they're complaining when he welcomed Sinners and he eats with them. So my question is
40 We think I'll always I don't know about you, but me. I come to this passage. I'm like, oh yeshua's associated with the outcasts of society. He's extending he's bringing in those who are who've been forsaken by the rest of the community, right? It seems pretty natural to think that. I got challenges this week, and I actually think I agree with the challenge. That we wouldn't call Tax Collectors. And sinners the outcasts of society. They may be on the outskirts, but they're not the outcasts. Because Sinners and tax collectors. Have violated the welfare of the family in the community.
28 And have thus walked out of Home and Community. You see they chose to go out of the community and to violate that. That inner level of trust that happens in a family in a community. So today I thought I wonder what Tax Collectors might be today. IRS agents No, I mean. Maybe partially true. Tax Collectors today or maybe some into some some comparable terms today might might be something like this. arms dealers loan sharks Insider Traders
13 collaboration with occupational governments Those who violate? the communal being this group of people that Yeshua is ministering to They're not just not welcome. If you understand, they've put themselves in that place even purposefully. in Yeshua is choosing this group of people to go and minister to Man, I can think of a lot of groups of people today that that might fall within that group within that category. In fact, I heard. I heard a message. I was listening to a message on my way in this morning. And this man was talking about.
00 some students in his his grouping some relatives or friends or something of people within his Circle who were going. to Syria to minister in the communities where the communities were ousting missionaries and one of them had just been murdered. one of those missionaries This is the type of grouping of people that we're talking about. If you understand the severity of of the groupings here. Yeshua is being very purposeful about reaching into this group.
46 And ministering to their needs. Not becoming a part of them. or in their world but ministering to them and drawing them out of their world and into his Yeshua noticed this grumbling in this in this in this sentence in this verse versus in verses 1 through 3 Yeshua notices the grumbling and he addresses a parable. But really actually not just a parable. There's actually three Parables that follow here in quick succession. So I know that we're I I tried to think about how I could do it all this week, but I realized it's impossible. To cover a chapter of Luke and one
32 Shabbat or at least for me. It's been difficult to cover 15 chapters over the last 15 months. Much less one chapter and one Shabbat. So but I want you to know that I'm giving you a heads up as we come into these Parables that there's a pattern there's a discernible pattern in The Parables and it goes like this. Something's lost. There's a search. Something's found and there's a celebration. So that you see that pattern but also I want you to notice one other thing. In the first Parable, it's one out of a hundred. In the second Parable, it's one out of 10. And in the third Parable it's one out of two.
18 So if you take those mathematically the value of the one. increases with each parable So just I'm laying that out. We're not going to get to the third Parable today, but we'll get to it next Shabbat. I'm laying that out so that you can have that. If one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them doesn't he leave the other 99 in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? Starting with verse 4 and when he does find it he joyfully hoisted onto his shoulders and when he gets home, he calls his friends and neighbors and says to come celebrate with me because I found my lost sheep. I tell you that in the same way. There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner. Who turns to God from his sins then over 99 righteous people who have no need to repent.
05 first of all was notice some details one sheep goes missing. I just want to ask a very practical question. How does that person know one sheep went missing? Because he's Counting. the Sheep not for the purposes of sleep. Let's see. That was a good joke. Come on, y'all you got to laugh at good jokes. Otherwise I'm Gonna Keep with the bad ones. anyways He's counting his flock. He's counting his flock, but actually it should pause us to pause for just a minute and think about what has already happened in terms of counting. So this past week on Wednesday night we went through.
53 the the ending of chapter 14 and we discussed Counting. counting the cost of being a follower of Yeshua Like counting the cost of building a tower. Because who's gonna build a tower and lay the foundation and if they haven't counted the cost, they're gonna lay the foundation they get halfway up in the towers. They ran out of money. At that point they become the laughing stock of all of their neighbors. How could you run out of money? Didn't you plan? you know when I was in flight school, I would go into the into the briefing room and there was a whiteboard. And it had written on it.
38 plan ahead Except it said pla in. Ahea, and they ran out of space and they put a d on the next line. You see it's important to plan ahead so you don't run out of space. Or you don't run out of money if your purpose is building a tower. Don't run out of money building a tower. Like count the cost you have to know everything that's going into it. We also talked about counting the cost of going to war against a stronger King with the stronger Army. Again. This is the ending of chapter 14. And the final thing that we talked about what is the cost of being of follower of Yeshua and you only know the cost? If you what it if you count it.
26 You don't know the cost unless you can count. So now the shepherd is counting or we presume actually as a Shepherd. It's the Sheep owner. Maybe they're one the same. Is counting the Sheep finds that one is lost. And he leaves the 99. I have a question. Do you really leave 99? Untended sheep in the desert. Probably not. Which to me presumes actually that he's either. At a place of security where where he can leave the 99. Or he's with another shepherding group or
12 two and they've agreed to watch his 99 while he goes. in searches for the one because I don't know about you guys, but sheep kind of. meander or they can and if he were to leave the 99 go find the one and come back and they're all gone. What he's really done is he's lost 99 sheep. He saved one, but he lost 99. Rather he was counting the cost ahead of time and created a plan for those 99 and then went after the one. Maybe they're well. I also I also want to just cause us
00 to recall. that there is a parable. I don't know if it's really a parable or if it's really just God telling or relating the people of Israel to sheep. in the Book of Ezekiel chapter 34 in their sheep, who 've won not just wandered away, but purposely wandered away. And they've gone in different directions and and the Shepherds of Israel. Haven't tended or cared for the Sheep. and and God says I'm going to come down and care for the Sheep. I'm going to be the one who comes in and brings in those sheep that are out and lost. And he says this is what God says in Ezekiel 34 verse 16. I
47 encourage you go read the whole chapter. But in 34 16, he says I will seek the Lost bring back the Stray bind up the broken and strengthen the sick. I mean that sounds a lot like what Yeshua? Yeshua does so the shepherd comes back with the Sheep around his shoulders. Why is the Sheep being carried? Well, it's already demonstrated that it's willing to wander off. And so the shepherd's like you know what I'm not going to do this twice. I'm just gonna put you on my shoulders. We'll go back to the flock. Put some on the on his shoulders. And when he comes back, he's joyful that he's found his sheep.
36 He's so joyful that he throws a party. now I just some of us can't necessarily identify with this. and I started thinking I was like What is it that we love that if we lose it? You see because I want you to understand a sheep owner or a Shepherd loves their sheep. And so today what is it that we love that we could lose? And we would be willing to put the 99 in one spot and go after that one. Because if you really think about it. 99 and one it's probably worth it the chances of the risk just to let the one go
26 Because you can have more sheep with the 99. If you think about that. But this owner loves the one loves all of his flocks so much that he's willing to go above and beyond the risk assessment if you will. I hope I'm not going to embarrass you Clarice, but it reminds me of my mother-in-law with dogs. I started thinking about this and I was like, who do I know that loves loves an animal so much that they're willing to go out on the line. And I thought man that's Clarice. She goes she has these dogs and me. I'll tell you I love dogs. I just wanted you guys know I like dogs. But the Clarice is a different level. And and but she loves
13 her dog so much that she's gonna go out and find that one that's missing. She's gonna put the rest of them in the pin and make sure there's no hole. Where the first one got out. And make sure all of that and then she's gonna go out and she's gonna go find her dog in the neighborhood and figure out how it got out. And she's gonna find that dog and she's gonna carry it back. She's not gonna allow it to walk back by itself. She's gonna carry that dog back. And she's gonna at the same time love the dog and also go. I can't believe you maybe go through all this worry. I this is how we should be picturing this Parable. This is what she was talking about. The Sheep has found and brought back.
59 When he gets home, he invites those who are nearby to celebrate the occasion with him notice. It says his friends and Neighbors. Those are what I would call Locale those who are in a certain distance. When you invite someone to come with you who's nearby who to celebrate in something that the Lord has done for you? It reminds me of an offering in Leviticus chapter 3. In your in your in the English text it will it'll say you'll your Bible will say something like the peace offering. But the peace offering is more than just that or the Thanksgiving offering it's more than just that. It's when the Lord has. Gone above and beyond in your own life that you
46 bring this offering to him, but it's not just you bringing the offering by the way you bring the offering. And you bring everyone with you because the Commandment is in Leviticus chapter 3 that you have to eat it in one sitting. So I don't know about all of you, but I doubt I can eat a lamb. I mean a lamb. Not lamb but a lamb. In one sitting by myself, which necessitates that I have to bring other people with me and welcome them into the blessing that God has given to me in my own life. And who am I going to bring those who are nearby? Hey come with me come here. We got to we got to celebrate What the Lord Has Done in my life. Let's have a meal together. Were Jews.
31 We eat. Let's have a meal together. Come celebrate with me all of you. This is amazing What the Lord Has Done in my life? You see a small portion was offered on the altar, but the remaining was eaten by the by by the one who was the offerer, but also by their friends and Neighbors. And Yeshua reflects after this after he tells his Parable you sure reflects according to Luke's recording. Yeshua reflects, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who turns to God from his sins then over 99 righteous people who have no need to repent.
19 Dr. Stern says in his commentary. This phrase no need to repent is literally who are such as to have no need to repent there is I'm reading Dr. Stern's commentary. There is joy in heaven over an open sinner who is obvious need to repent and does so at last but there is also Joy over those who have maintained a condition of righteousness by always and regularly turning to God and repentance who do not need the thorough and soul shaking experience of the repentance which a lost person or a lost sheep often goes through when he turns to God from a pattern of sin clearly. Yeshua does not regarded the grumbling of the Pharisees and the Torah teachers to whom he is speaking as having maintained such a condition of righteousness.
09 Do you understand the logic here? You rejoice over both? And those who are righteous Rejoice over those who are not righteous and they're turning to the Lord. They don't Grumble and so Yeshua is clearly attacking. the perception that they are the 99 as having maintained a such a condition of righteousness, so he's trying to shake their mistaken supposition that righteousness can consist in following a set of rules apart from generally from genuinely trusting God and one's heart. Let's move on to the next parable. another example What woman if she has 10 drachmas and loses one of these valuable coins won't light a
56 lamp sweep the house search all over until she finds it. And when she does find is she calls her friends and neighbors together and says come celebrate with me because I have found the drachma. I lost. And the same way I tell you there is Joy among God's angels when one sinner repents. A woman with ten drachmas loses one of the coins so last it was one out of 100 one sheep out of 100 sheep now. It's one coin out of 10. So what's a drachma according to Josephus in the book of Antiquities? I explained this early with the children. I'm going to go over it again a half shackle. was equivalent to two drachmas the half shekel was the temple tax. I just found it interesting that.
43 I'm teaching on this passage today and it happens to be Shabbat shekaleem, which is when the temple tax is required is very interesting to me. I don't know if it means anything but it's interesting. This is the Shabbat as I mentioned on the Jewish calendar where it's recognized that Jewish men bring their Temple tax. to the temple So a drachma was a silver coin. It was the equivalent to a laborers daily wage. So I just I used Rabbi Google this week and I thought How much is a is a just a laborers daily wage in Dallas?
29 And so apparently according to Rabbi Google. That in Dallas today. So in this month of February a daily a laborers daily wage is approximately 170 dollars. I figured that it said that I think it was $22 an hour was the average and so I counted it for for eight hours and you get about 170. So I just want you to think about that because this woman has misplaced one drachma. Because I'll tell you when I read this Parable. I'm like It's one coin. If you don't find it, you don't find it. You still got nine?
16 but when I think about a hundred and seventy dollars I think Sweetie, let's clean the house. We got we got to sweep this place where the 170 dollars go. In terms of the cleaning of the house. Oh, by the way, before she before she Cleaves out. She lights a lamp so we can presume actually that is probably dusk or Nightfall or nighttime. And also that she probably doesn't have a window in the house if it's daytime to let light in so she has to light a lamp. And she's looking around. She sweeps the floor. The floors are likely either dirt or stone. And if there's Stone then they're pushed together to the
03 point where there's a crack in between the stones, you know today, we fill it with grout. But there's a crack in between the stones where a coin could follow. Imagine it would be easy for a coin to fall. In fact, the reason we have so many coins from that era today. Is because archeology archaeologists find the coins a fell into the cracks. And we have those coins as evidence of what they looked like. So she's sweeping the floors. Why would she sweep the floor either? She'll find it or she'll be able to hear it if she brushes it and she hears it clatter over the stone. She really has to search through the hidden areas in her life to find this coin.
49 Now if if a hundred and seventy dollars isn't motivation enough for for one of you to to find to go on a search in your own house. I just want to show you this this picture and and see if this applies true in your own life if you guys can pop up that picture. You ever notice that you lose all trust in everyone in the house when you're trying to find the remote control? Are you sitting on the remote control? No, get up. I need to check. I gotta check under you in the next SEA crack right there. I gotta check for that remote control that remote control is
36 like three dollars. But we go through all this searching when we find when we're trying to find a remote control. Just take that and go more. For the purpose of finding this lost coin. When she finds the coin she calls to those nearby to celebrate with her because she has found what is lost she calls the friends and neighbors to come and celebrate just like what the shepherd does. It's interesting because Proverbs 27 says the end of disaster. It's better. To have a neighbor nearby than a relative far away.
21 I think the opposite is also true. Those who share in a disaster are now sharing in the celebration. So it's it's good to celebrate with those who are nearby who are within your circle who know what's going on in your life day in and day out when the Lord blesses you it's good to celebrate with one another. It's encouraging to one another. This Parable is an interesting Parable because John Lightfoot. caught in his commentary says this there's a parable not much unlike this in midras sheer Rabbi Pincus or Phineas as some of you might say pinkas been yair expounds if you seek wisdom as silver.
07 So this is we're going from again from The Book of Proverbs. If you seek wisdom as silver that is if you seek the things of Torah as his and treasures it is like a man who if he loses a shekel or an ornament in his house. He lights some candles till he finds it. If it be thus for the things of this world how much more may it be for the things of the world to come? you see the parable is almost the same. Because Yeshua rejoices with his commentary. Right after the woman finds a coin in rejoices and he says there's joy among God's angels when one Center repents talking about the world to come. There's joy for today certainly, but there's joy even more so for the world to come.
56 So I want to come back around. And I want I want to I want to just reiterate a couple things that we noticed. One we noticed that there's a pattern because we're going to we're going to look next week and we're going to see the same pattern. We noticed that there's a pattern something lost. A search something found and a celebration. I want you to remember that there's a value. an ever-increasing value with these Parables one out of a hundred is worth one out of a hundred. one out of 10 if I could put it the other way one out of 100 is worth one one out of 10 is worth 10. And one out of two is worth 50.
44 If I if I just flip the flip the numbers if that makes sense. So the next week's Parable whatever the one that is lost. Is extremely more valuable than the one sheep? And I think that lesson is actually still true today in our lives. we we think about animals that get lost we think about money that gets lost but the reality is is the human soul that gets lost as much much more valuable. And it's important for us to remember that as we're interacting with others.
30 inside and outside of Brook Hashem So, what are you counting? Are you counting what is wrong or unrighteous with the followers of Yeshua? or those who gather around him? Are you counting or are you counting the value of finding a lost sheep or a coin? And what is that worth? Are you counting the value of a life that repents and turns to the Lord? What is it that you're counting as you're just thinking about these two Parables and as you stew on this week and on these two this week and you're probably going to go look ahead and see what the third one is as you think about these.
16 These three Parables. What is it that you're counting? In your own life, just think about that. What is it that you're counting? I have a question for you, which I ask all the time. Who are you in this story? Are you the Pharisee or the Torah teacher? Grumbling about the Sinners that are seeking out Yeshua. Or are you the sinner seeking out Yeshua? And the life that he offers. Those are two pretty plain ones, but let me add a third one. or perhaps as Yeshua instructs us you see if you go back to the very beginning of The Parables of these in
03 this chapter Yeshua says which one of you if you Were a sheep owner or a shepherd? Which one of you if you were in this position? So are you identifying with the Sheep owner or the woman who recognizes that there are those lost and does everything within their power to seek them out bring them to Yeshua and rejoice when they when they repent that way. in heaven the Angels rejoice and we're not just rejoicing for today. We're not just rejoicing for a life that's turned today, but for a life that has an eternal and eternal
49 inheritance Eternal something really difficult for us to grasp because we're so finite we think about today. You know, what's my bill today? How much do I have to pay today? You mean I got to pay taxes eternally. As long as there's a government. but in the Life to Come When one sinner repents today? It gains and it strengthens the kingdom. That is yet to be in full. And that starts with one change today. It
34 starts with the one if you go back to the very beginning when I was talking about the Kingdom of Heaven coming. If you if you want to see that in the Eternal Kingdom it starts with one change today. In sometimes if you consider yourself to be one of the righteous it sometimes is a change within us. The causes the one who is outside of our limitations. to go wait, but I do want that. And then to turn you see there's numerous times when the scripture says. Or when the Lord says to Israel. If you return to me.
21 I will return to you it takes it's a two-way street. When we turn to the Lord the Lord will turn to us. We know that because he's done it. For 4,000 years with the people of Israel, and he hasn't stopped. in fact every day when we find a Jewish person who turns the Yeshua is a day that proves the god of Israel the god of Abraham Isaac and Jacob is true and faithful and just And that when one of us turns to him. It causes a ripple effect in others will also turn.
